Privacy and cookies

What we keep when you play.

Effective 25 Oct 2026.

Slightly Better Trivia is a Slightly Strange Studios production operated by Slightly Better Company LLC. You can watch the show and browse this site without creating an anonymous gameplay record. Playing, which means locking in an answer, stores a little, and this page says exactly what.

The first time you lock in an answer, the site sets one cookie, __Host-sbt_player. Viewing pages never sets it. It holds a long random code made for your browser, nothing else: not your name, not your device, not where you are.

  • It lets this site recognise your browser, so your first answer is the one that counts.
  • It lasts 365 days from the last time you answered, and each answer renews it.
  • Your browser sends it only to this site’s exact address and only over a secure connection. It is not sent when another website tries to submit an answer to this site, and scripts on the page cannot read it.
  • It is the only cookie this site sets. Nothing else is stored in your browser.
  • The site does not show a separate cookie prompt. You decide whether the cookie is set by deciding whether to lock in an answer.

Your answers

For each question you answer, our server stores:

  • which question it was, and which answer you chose;
  • whether that answer was correct;
  • when it was recorded;
  • a key made from your cookie’s code by a one-way calculation. The code itself is never stored, and the key cannot be turned back into it.

We use these to keep your first answer as the one that counts, to show you your result when you come back, to mark which archive questions you have played, and to count how everyone answered.

The live database keeps these records until you use “Forget this browser”. There is no automatic 90-day, one-year, or other time-based deletion of gameplay records.

We do not ask for or store your name, email address, phone number, account, password, or location. The game has no accounts, scores, leaderboards, or streaks.

How everyone answered

For each question we keep a running total of how many players chose each answer. The totals come from answers that remain in the live database. When a browser is forgotten, its answers are deleted and the totals and percentages go down with them. You see the figures only after you have answered that question yourself, and only once at least 10 players have answered it.

The totals count browsers, not people. Someone who clears their cookies, or uses another browser, counts again. We limit how fast answers can arrive, but we cannot guarantee that every answer comes from a different person.

What “anonymous” means here

  • Your answers are linked to each other through your browser’s key, but not to you. We have no way to look them up by your name or address.
  • Anyone who uses the same browser profile as you plays as you, and can see your results.
  • If you delete the cookie, this site no longer recognises your browser. Your earlier answers stay stored, and still count in the totals, but you can no longer see them here, and you can answer those questions again as a new player. Losing the cookie may also mean you can no longer use this site to find or delete those earlier records.
  • The key is a pseudonym, not an anonymous value in the legal sense: answers linked by it can still be personal data.

Forget this browser

The “Forget this browser” control uses the existing protected cookie to identify this browser. It does not accept a player key typed into a form or URL. After you confirm, it deletes every linked answer and progress marker from the live database, updates community figures, and clears the cookie. It does not affect other players.

The server keeps the old one-way browser key as a revocation marker, with no answers or progress attached. This stops a request already in flight with the old cookie from putting deleted answers back. Repeating the action is safe.

Historical backups are separate copies. Deleted records may remain in a backup until that copy expires. We are working toward keeping ordinary production backups for approximately 14 days, but that is not a guaranteed maximum because expiry of every local, off-site, and historical copy has not been fully configured and verified. Restoring a backup made before deletion could restore those records and remove the revocation marker. We keep gameplay disabled during a database restoration while this risk is reviewed. We do not yet have a separate deletion ledger that can automatically identify and remove every previously deleted record from a restored backup.

Analytics, advertising, and other services

This site uses Umami analytics, which we host ourselves, to count page views. When a page loads, your browser also loads a small script from our analytics server and sends it one page view: the page’s address without anything after a “?”, the page title, the website that linked you here (its domain only, never another page of this site), your screen size and browser language, and your browser, operating system, and device type.

  • The analytics server receives your IP address with each request. Umamiuses it to estimate an approximate country and to tell visits apart without cookies, and does not store the address itself in its analytics records.
  • It sets no cookies. It never receives the trivia player cookie or key, which answers you chose, whether you were right, or your progress, and we send it no other events. Its data is kept separately from gameplay records.
  • If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, the script sends nothing. Blocking the script does not affect the game.
  • Analytics data does not currently have an automatic time-based deletion schedule. A utility designed to delete SBT analytics after 12 calendar months has passed isolated testing, but recurring production deletion is not enabled.
  • Requests for the analytics script and page views pass through Cloudflare to our self-hosted analytics server. Cloudflare and the server may process and log IP addresses and request details to deliver, operate, and protect the service.

The site uses no advertising, social media widgets, or embedded videos, and we do not sell or share information for advertising. Its fonts and images come from this site. Links to the show on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook are ordinary links: those services apply their own policies only if you follow them.

Who handles your requests

  • Slightly Better Company LLC operates this site. Its mailing address is 1222 Dixon Blvd, Unit #144, Cocoa, FL 32922, USA.
  • Cloudflare provides this site’s domain name, secure connection, and protection against abuse. Every request passes through Cloudflare, which processes your IP address and request details to deliver and protect the site, under its own privacy policy.
  • The game runs on a server in Florida, USA, which Cloudflare connects to through an encrypted tunnel. Your answers are stored in SQLite on that server and in historical backups. If you visit from outside the United States, your requests and answers are processed in the United States.
  • The game itself does not store your IP address. To keep the game working under heavy or automated traffic, the server keeps request counters in its memory only, labelled with a scrambled form of your address made with a secret that changes whenever the server restarts. They are never written to disk. Their number is capped, older counters are discarded as new ones arrive, and all of them are lost when the server restarts.
  • When something goes wrong, the game logs what failed with a random reference number. It does not log your cookie, your key, your answers, or your address. The network services in front of the game, including Cloudflare, may record request details such as IP addresses to operate and secure the site.

Children

Slightly Better Trivia is general-audience entertainment. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The game never asks for anyone’s age, name, or contact details. If you believe a child under 13 has played and you want their answers removed, use “Forget this browser” on the browser they used, or contact us at the address below.

Your choices and rights

  • You can watch the show and browse every page here without playing.
  • You can delete the cookie at any time in your browser’s settings. What happens next is described above.
  • Use Forget this browser while this browser still has its identifier cookie to delete its live answers and progress.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over personal information about you, such as asking what we hold, asking us to correct or delete it, or objecting to how we use it, and you may be able to complain to your local data protection authority. We will not treat you differently for asking.

Because the game does not know who you are, we can usually find your answers only through the browser that made them, so “Forget this browser” is the quickest way to delete them. For anything else, email us. We may ask for information that helps us find the records you mean, and only for that.
